Students at Eichold-Mertz School of Math, Science & Technology spent a day learning from some amazing local heroes last week during Community Helper Day! A chef shared the art of cooking, nurses taught how to care for others, and Family Intervention Team members reminded them about the power of kindness and support. First-graders in Ms. Mohler’s class at Kate Shepard Elementary were hard at work in the construction zone last week to celebrate a successful first quarter. Students built houses with 3D shapes, completed building inspections to identify shapes, and used bulldozers to plow through addition and subtraction. They also put their grammar and reading skills to the test and worked together to construct complete sentences. Several schools were recognized at the MCPSS Principals' Meeting this week for outstanding participation in the 2024-25 United Way campaign. Holloway Elementary, Phillips Preparatory and LeFlore Magnet High School received awards for being the district's top fundraising schools. Council Traditional School received the Spirit Award for the top employee giving. Schools and departments will start United Way campaigns in mid-January. All funds raised stay in our local community, with a significant portion of funds helping MCPSS students and families. #PerseverancePropelsProgress

Five MCPSS School Counselors were honored this month with the Alabama School Counseling Association's Program of Distinction Award and one was recognized as the Alabama New School Counselor of the Year. The Program of Distinction Award recognizes school counseling programs that demonstrate high implementation of a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling program.
