March 2 is Dr. Seuss's birthday, which also heralds the opening of Read Across America Week, and MCPSS students are celebrating the joy of reading. At Leinkauf Elementary, Pre-K and first-grade students held a Dr. Seuss Vocabulary Parade. At Meadowlake Elementary, Pre-K students tasted green eggs and ham and created their own cat characters with colorful hats. Guest readers, including Mobile County Board of School Commissioners President Sherry Dillihay-McDade, shared stories with students at George Hall Elementary, Taylor-White Elementary and other schools. And at Hankins Middle, students explored Dr. Seuss's World War II political cartoons. Donate your Mardi Gras beads to a great cause: The bead program at Augusta Evans Special School. The students repackage the beads and sell them to mystic societies. Proceeds support programs at the school. The drop-off dates are this Saturday and Sunday (March 7 and 8) at 6301 Biloxi Avenue from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on March 7 and from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on March 8. Those who donate at least 12 pounds of beads (about the size of a grocery bag) will receive a voucher for one dozen regular glazed doughnuts at Krispy Kreme! #LearningLeading

LeFlore is state bound! The Rattlers defeated Charles Henderson 53-47 on Tuesday to win the 5A boys South Regional tournament and earn a berth in the AHSAA state tournament next week in Birmingham.
