Words are like toothpaste -- once they come out of the tube, you cannot put them back. Students in Mrs. Sullivan's third-grade class at McDavid-Jones Elementary learned the importance of being kind and choosing their words carefully during a Leader In Me activity this week. #PerseverancePropelsProgress

Ragan Percherke loves teaching kindergarten. "They come to you not knowing really anything, and you get to see all those little learning light bulbs go off," said Percherke, who is in her fourth year at Hutchens Elementary. "By the end of the year, they're leaving knowing all these math strategies and they're able to read. It's just such a rewarding grade to teach." Percherke, whose mother was a teacher, started her own career in education after moving around the country while her husband was in the U.S. Coast Guard. She was Hutchens' Teacher of the Year in 2024. #PerseverancePropelsProgress

Seniors in the International Baccalaureate program at Murphy High School have been busy in the first few weeks of school! They built benches donated by Keep Mobile Beautiful and used proceeds raised from faculty to build a new garden bed in honor of IB Coordinator Rebecca Mullins' mother. The bed will be dedicated to growing only broccoli. They also collected enough funds to buy materials to fix eight other beds and made a donation to Feeding The Gulf Coast. #PerseverancePropelsProgress

Mr. McDonald's students at Theodore High School designed, built and tested their own remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) last week thanks to Dauphin Island Sea Lab - Discovery Hall programs. Working in teams, they used creativity, problem-solving, and engineering skills to construct prototypes capable of navigating underwater and collecting simulated ocean data. This hands-on activity challenged students to think like marine engineers and provided a look at the innovation behind ocean exploration. #PerseverancePropelsProgress

MCPSS arts teachers are bringing the world of fine arts to their students! Davidson High theater instructor Gloria Poorman trained this summer at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London through a scholarship from the English Speaking Union of the United States. She worked with professional actors and directors to explore performance-based strategies for teaching Shakespeare — breaking down the Bard’s language and bringing scenes to life through scaffolding and chunking techniques. Now she’s bringing that energy and expertise to Davidson's fall production of Romeo and Juliet, which will hit the stage in October. #PerseverancePropelsProgress

MCPSS Career Coaches kicked off the year at the Mobile Airport Authority, learning about the many different jobs needed to keep an airport running smoothly. From the runway to the terminal, airports depend on careers in air traffic, ground support, safety, maintenance, security, baggage handling, passenger services; and even operations management. Some of these careers start right after high school, while others, like operations management, air traffic control or engineering, require a four-year degree. The Career Coaches will use this knowledge to help students explore these pathways. #PerseverancePropelsProgress

Mrs. Easterling’s students at Mary G. Montgomery High School took on a hands-on challenge called “Soft Skills & AI – Building Together” to see just how important soft skills are in the workplace. Students were given unique roles, ranging from Open Communicator to Conflict Creator, Dependable & Reliable to Not Willing to Adapt. They then worked in two companies:

-- Company A used AI-powered robots to help with production.
-- Company B relied solely on live employees.

The goal was to fill customer orders as quickly as possible while navigating different personalities, communication styles, and work habits. The takeaway: Technology can speed things up, but soft skills are the real power tools in the workplace! #PerseverancePropelsProgress
