
Lucas Rigby, a 2025 Davidson High School graduate, is the WKRG News 5 Scholar-Athlete of the Week! Rigby was captain of Davidson's soccer team and a member of the Investment Club, National Honor Society and Davidson International Model United Nations. Rigby graduated with a 5.02 GPA and made a 35 on the ACT. He plans to study mechanical engineering at Auburn University. Two more members of Davidson High School's Class of 2025 have been awarded National Merit Scholarships. Matthew Ngo will receive a college-sponsored scholarship from UAB, where he plans to study psychiatry, and Igor DeBoi will get one from the University of Alabama, where he'll study chemical engineering. About 150 JROTC cadets from 16 local schools are at Spring Hill College this week for the 10th annual JROTC STEM Leadership Academy, sponsored by Mobile County Public Schools. Cadets from B.C. Rain High School recently competed in the National JROTC Fitness Challenge Championships In Daytona Beach. This annual event draws JROTC teams from all services to compete in a variety of physical fitness challenges, testing cadets' strength, speed, endurance and teamwork. The event is a culmination of regional competitions with the top-performing teams from each brigade invited to compete. #LearningLeading


Vigor High students claimed the top three spots recently in Palmer Williams Group's fourth annual "Bossin' Up Teen Pitch Competition." The event is designed to encourage entrepreneurship by providing a platform for teens to present business ideas to local entrepreneurs.
Vigor's Jakira Spencer claimed first place, earning a $2,000 prize to help launch her business. Miracle King placed second and Samuel Dunn was third. #LearningLeading


The Mobile County Commission recently recognized Class of 2025 Murphy High graduate Preston Burks, who has been named the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Alabama Youth of the Year. Preston dedicated himself to service through roles including senior class secretary, Student Government Association executive board member and Crittenton Teen Ambassador. Two culinary arts teams from Baker High School recently competed against 70 teams from across the nation in the "Cook Around the World" competition at Walt Disney World. The contest involved secret ingredients including shrimp, rice, and asparagus, with Europe as the designated regional category. Great job! #LearningLeading


More than 190 Mobile County Public Schools students were awarded internships with more than 80 local businesses, organizations, governmental entities and MCPSS departments as part of the MCPSS Summer Internship Program. The Giving Tree was created to recognize the excellence of Mobile County Public Schools educators who are named Teacher of the Year or who earn state or national awards. Superintendent Chresal D. Threadgill and the Mobile County Board of School Commissioners recently welcomed the latest additions to The Giving Tree as their names were added to the display at Central Office. Congratulations to Baker High School's Rachel Guillotte, the WKRG News 5 Scholar-Athlete of the Week! Guillotte is a rising senior who is a defensive specialist on the varsity volleyball team. She plays club volleyball for the Lower Alabama Volleyball Club National White team. Guillotte is a Baker Ambassador and is a part of the Hornet Hooligans, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Diamond Dolls, and SWARM core. Several MCPSS students excelled in the recent Law Day essay and art competitions sponsored by the Mobile Bar Association. Tyron Rhodes of Citronelle High (pictured) placed first in the high school essay competition and Or'Reanna Davis of B.C. Rain placed third. Ariana Heckman of Clark-Shaw Magnet placed third in the middle school essay competition, and Robbins Elementary's Chyler Green was second in the elementary art contest. During the Mobile County Board of School Commissioners' May meeting, Board President Dr. Reginald Crenshaw presented Coach Ben Harris with a resolution to commend him for his induction into the National High School Football Hall of Fame. Coach Harris, who led Blount High School to four Class 5A state championships during his 19 years there, is the first high school coach in the state to receive this honor. He also has been named to the Alabama High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, the Alabama State Athletics Hall of Fame, the Baldwin County Sports Hall of Fame, and the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will be held on June 14 in Canton, Ohio. #LearningLeading

Teams from B.T. Washington and Alba middle schools and Barton Academy for Advanced World Studies participated in the inaugural MCPSS Brain Bowl competition this week at the Murphy High School auditorium. The students tested their knowledge on a variety of subjects, including geography, U.S. history, mathematics and art, with Barton Academy coming out on top.
