Twenty-nine robotics teams from 16 MPCSS elementary schools participated in the MCPSS VEX IQ Elementary Challenge on Saturday at Clark-Shaw School of Math, Science & Technology. Teams from Dawes Intermediate, Dodge, Taylor-White, and Old Shell Road Magnet won awards and received invitations to the Alabama State Championship VEX IQ Robotics Competition at Wallace State Community College. Mary G. Montgomery football player Brayden Turner was honored Thursday by NBC 15 as the Friday Night Rivals Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Turner carries a 4.5 GPA at MGM and volunteers with several organizations in his community. NBC 15 and award sponsor Andrew's Diesel and Automotive Repair presented Turner with a $5,000 scholarship, and his family was on hand for the surprise announcement. Turner plans to study mechanical engineering at Auburn University. Jennifer Asberry, the 2026 MCPSS Elementary Teacher of the Year, introduces students at Council Traditional School to the wonders of science in the school's STEAM Lab. She's created an annual Family STEAM Night at the school and leads after-school clubs focusing on engineering, math & science. She's served as an Elementary Science Curriculum Writer and a mentor teacher. She believes in hands-on, experimental learning, using real-world applications that help students relate to the science behind everything around them. Daniela Yunker, the 2026 MCPSS Middle School Teacher of the Year, makes learning German fun and meaningful for her students at Barton Academy for Advanced World Studies. She initiated the German Honor Society, with a focus on volunteering at local events including Christmas caroling at Cathedral Square. She created a partnership with Gymnasium Veitshöchheim, a school in Bavaria who students are now pen pals with her students at Barton. She co-sponsors Barton's running club and helped lead an educational trip to Europe in 2024. She is also pursuing a Ph.D. in global Leadership at Troy University. Dr. Chelsea Tanous of Davidson High, the 2026 MCPSS High School Teacher of the Year, has her students excited about learning French. She's created unique learning experiences for her students, teaching them about the culture as well as the language, connecting them through video with French-speaking students in Senegal, helping to organize a mini-international festival at the school, and even taking a group of them for an educational tour through Europe. She’s taught world language for 14 years, joining the staff at Davidson in 2021 and serving as the school’s World Language Department Chair since 2023.
