MCPSS Career Coach Darwin Bolden recently guided middle school students at Faulkner Career Technical Center's CTE Summer Camp through a Virtual Reality career simulation, giving them an idea of what real-world jobs are like. Through VR, they performed knee surgery, drove forklifts, managed air traffic, styled hair in a salon, repaired automotive engines, responded as firefighters, and conducted science experiments. It was a fun way to bring careers to life and help students see what’s possible in their future! #LearningLeading

Students at George Hall Elementary are doing another mural with help from the Mobile Arts Council! Artist Soynika Bush is helping them create a portable mural for the school's garden that can also moved anywhere in the building. The students sketched ideas, which Bush took to create a design incorporating them all into one mural. The school thanks Kathleen Stoves of the Mobile Arts Council and its Amp Up Arts program, which previously helped George Hall students create a mural for its main hall, for returning to help with this project. #LearningLeading

Recent Davidson High graduates Brian Carr and Thien Ma and rising senior Sariah Hossain were awarded the Alabama Affiliate Award in the Senior Division at National History Day Competition for their project on the Capitol Crawl, a 1990 disability rights protest. They were joined by rising junior Zander Snyman and several incoming freshman at the competition at the University of Maryland, also visiting Washington, D.C., and meeting two of Alabama's congressional representatives, Sen. Katie Britt and Rep. Shomari Figures. #LearningLeading

The Mobile County Public Schools Class of 2025 earned an impressive $148 million in scholarships. Nearly 60 percent of the class earned at least one scholarship, an increase of nearly 5 percent over 2024. And that number included 650 students who are the first in their families to attend college, also a significant increase over 2024. #LearningLeading

Mobile County Public Schools was well represented at the recent National History Day contest in Washington, D.C. Included were Murphy High Interational Baccalaureate seniors Lexington Bush, Jayde Robinson, Potter Boutwell and Harmony Maxie, and a group of Lott Middle School students, who presented projects on the MOWA Choctaw Tribe, local educational pioneer Rosa A. Lott, the Boston Tea Party, and Ruby Bridges. Bush and Robinson also got to present their exhibit, "The Literary Legacy of African Americans during the Harlem Renaissance," at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Congratulations to Davidson High theater teacher Gloria Poorman, who earned a $5,000 scholarship to study teaching techniques for Shakespeare in London for 10 days this summer. The program. titled "Teaching Shakespeare Through Performance," takes place in July at The Globe Theatre. It features practical classes in voice, movement and text that she'll be able to use to enhance the learning experiences of her DHS Theatre students. #LearningLeading

About 150 JROTC cadets from 16 local schools had a great experience at last week's JROTC STEM Leadership Academy, sponsored by Mobile County Public Schools. They honed their STEM skills by building and testing a motorized floating device, and visited several maritime-themed businesses and organizations, like Alabama Shipyards, the USS Alabama Battleship, GulfQuest, MAWSS, and the U.S. Coast Guard. They also participated in many different leadership activities, including rappeling and land navigation. #LearningLeading

Murphy High alumni were on stage at the Tony Awards last night in New York! Paul Williams and Nikisha Williams, both 2007 Murphy graduates, performed behind actress Cynthia Erivo during the opening number for the annual award ceremony, which honors the top Broadway performances. #LearningLeading

Congratulations to the Causey Middle School archery team, which took first place in the middle school division in Bullseye in the the 2025 NASP World Competition in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and second place in 3D. The team was led by Gavin Spann, who placed in the top 12 in both events. Individual competitors from Baker High, Grand Bay Middle and Eichold-Mertz and Castlen Elementary also participated, with Grand Bay's Gunnar Couch placing first in middle school boys and fourth overall in both Bullseye and 3D, and Castlen's Sophie Bush placing third in elementary girls in 3D. #LearningLeading
