The Mobile County Board of School Commissioners is considering two calendar options for the 2026-27 school year. Employees are invited to vote on their preferred option at their school or within their department. The Board will host a public hearing on Thursday, February 12, at 3:30 p.m. in the Board Room at MCPSS Central Office, located at 1 Magnum Pass in west Mobile. Here are the options:
Students in the JAG (Jobs for America's Graduates) programs at LeFlore, Murphy and Williamson recently competed in the Southern District JAG Competition alongside students from more than 40 high schools across the region. Several Murphy students earned top finishes in their events and qualified for the JAG Alabama State Finals:

February is Black History Month! Students at Fonde Elementary got started early last week by celebrating some famous African Americans from Mobile, including baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron, Lonnie Johnson (former NASA engineer and inventor of the Super Soaker), the Excelsior Band, and others. Third-graders from 15 MCPSS elementary schools gathered at the Murphy High School auditorium over a two-day period last week to celebrate their completion of the Super Citizen Program. The 10-week program provided an immersive experience in civics, character, financial literacy and social studies. February is Career and Technical Education Month, and MCPSS has a wide range of CTE programs available to its students. Seniors at Baker High School are preparing for the PCT (Patient Care Technician) certification exam with a focus on infection control, including the wearing of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), hand hygiene, transmission-based precautions, safe handling & disposal of linens and sharps, and recognizing & reporting infection. Students practiced donning and doffing their PPE, playing "Just Dance" while wearing it to simulate the physical challenges of working in PPE — reinforcing technique, safety, and teamwork. #LearningLeading #PerseverancePropelsProgress
State and local leaders joined students from Eichold-Mertz School of Mathematics, Science and Technology for a parade today celebrating their perfect 100 score on the Alabama Department of Education report card. Eichold-Mertz has earned a perfect 100 on three of the last five state report cards, which are released annually, and was one of three schools in the local area to earn this distinction this year, joining Council Traditional School and Barton Academy for Advanced World Studies. Malik Hughes, a junior at Blount High School, has been excelling in chess! Hughes recently won all five of his matches in the Scholastic unrated division of the Bayside Open Chess Tournament in Daphne, finishing second in the tournament on a tie-breaker. He also finished third in the Mobile/Baldwin County Scholastic Chess League in the 2025-26 season, earning an All-Star Team plaque. Hughes is working to get his United States Chess Federation membership so he can play rated games against stronger opponents and continue to improve. #LearningLeading #PerseverancePropelsProgress
Congratulations to the Baker High and Causey Middle dance teams, which had excellent showings at the Dance Team Union Alabama State Championships! Baker took first place for Varsity Officer Routine, Varsity Pom, and Varsity Jazz, and was named Grand Champion for Pom with the highest score of the day in the entire competition. They were also awarded the WOW Award for their Pom routine. Several MCPSS schools have established Project Outreach programs, which build relationships between students with disabilities and their nondisabled peers. The Mobile County Board of School Commissioners recognized the Davidson High RobotEx team for placing first overall at the South's BEST Regional Robotics Tournament, held in December at Alabama A&M University. The students were challenged to design a robot that could maneuver around an obstacle course, where they sorted factual information from incorrect information on the internet to train AI models. Congratulations to Vigor High School's Sammy Dunn and Jabarrius Garror, who have been named Alabama's 5A Back and Lineman of the Year, respectively, by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.
