Elementary and middle schools around the county have been preparing for ACAP testing. Dawes Intermediate found a fun way to get ready, as fourth-graders transformed into a team of “medical professionals” and their classroom became a learning hospital! Students performed surgery with text features, compared and contrasted paired texts, and even prescribed the correct text structure to patients based on their symptoms. Each skill they mastered earned them a star. Students who earned five stars were promoted to Doctors. Today is Pi Day, and Scarborough Model Middle School recently celebrated with a Pi Memorization Competition, challenging its students to memorize the digits of pi and show off their math skills. Congratulations to Davidson High School’s Brayden Sadler, who scored a perfect 36 superscore on the ACT college entrance exam. Superscoring is calculated by combining a student’s highest subject scores in multiple testing attempts. Sadler is a National Honor Society member and a member of the 2025 Capstone Leadership Academy. Job shadowing and industry site visits are an important part of preparing students for careers in the workforce. Recently, members of B.C. Congratulations to Alba Middle School's Robotics Team 14180A, which won the Create Award at the State VEX IQ Robotics Competition this month and earned Alba's first-ever invitation to the World Competition in April in St Louis! Team members are Christie Bouaphanh, Gage Ferguson and Samson Sellars. The team was one of three from Alba to compete at the state level. Ten students from Clark-Shaw School of Math, Science & Technology racked up first-place finishes in the Mobile Regional Science & Engineering Fair last week, while students from Phillips Preparatory and Davidson High School also earned top honors. Clark-Shaw students placing first in their categories in the junior division were: Rainica Jin, Aisha Raza, Rory Weatherford, Alexandia Ginocchio, Abigail McGriff, Corbin Perry, Roxson Odom, Cardin Phan, Emily Perez Roman and Paisley Knighten. Phillips' Abigail Krause also took first place in the junior division, while Davidson's Violet Borchert won first place in two categories in the senior division: Animal & Plant Science and Statistics. Two teams from Barton Academy for Advanced World Studies competed at the VEX V5 Middle Schools State Championship last weekend, and one of them qualified for the VEX World Championship! VEX V5 team 3660X won the Innovate award, placed third in Skills, and advanced to the quarterfinals at the state competition. They explored with microscopes and created masterpieces with Mrs. Wright and Coastal Makers Art Studio. They learned about SeaPerch robots with Dauphin Island Sea Lab and learned about aquatic life with the BayMobile Touch Lab. They mastered aerodynamics with Flight Works Alabama and flying drones with ATIM. They played games with Mathnasium of Mobile and Mario Kart with MCPSS' Technology Department. Mrs. Ivey's fourth-grade class at Collier Elementary is celebrating reading with March Book Madness, pitting books against each other and letting students choose their favorite. Students had their first elimination in the Mythical Matchups region after reading "The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors" and "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs." After some thoughtful voting, "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs came out on top and will advance to the next round.
