The Peer Helpers at Castlen Elementary recently collected toiletries to donate to a local homeless shelter, Ryan's Refuge. Castlen's first-graders, in particular, rose to the challenge, donating 232 toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste! Also included in the donations were 48 bottles of body wash, 43 bottles of shampoo/conditioner, 140 deodorant sticks, and 23 bars of soap. Seniors at Baker High School continued a long-standing tradition at the school last week, picking up their freshmen letters. During their ninth-grade English class with Ms. Ivey and Ms. Busby three years ago, students wrote a letter to their future selves. Several Alma Bryant High students recently were named to the Bayou La Batre Youth Council! They got an opportunity to participate in a real Bayou La Batre City Council meeting, stepping into the roles of local government officials to learn more about how city government operates and the importance of civic engagement.

Students in the Education and Training and the Horticulture programs at Bryant Career Technical Center hosted a fun and engaging outdoor classroom field trip for Dixon Elementary School first-graders this week. Students explored the life cycle of a plant, learned about pollinators, explored the sensory gardens, and practiced using weather instruments. Wilmer Elementary fifth-grader Cameron Hearn recently led his Red Ribbon Week project, “Adopt an Officer.” Each grade level at the school was paired with an officer who serves the school and community. Bryant Career Technical Center got a big boost this week in its mission to train tomorrow's workforce, as it received grants totaling over $83,000 by the Alabama Construction Industry Craft Training Board. March is National Nutrition Month, and students at Callahan School for the Deaf & Blind had fun last week learning about healthy choices in the library! They read "I Can Eat a Rainbow" and "Just Try One Bite," and then sampled fruits and veggies like avocados, carrots, bananas, oranges, grapes, and strawberries. They also talked about the difference between healthy foods and unhealthy choices like chips, cookies, and candy. Students made avocado and grape crafts and took a poll to see which fruits and vegetables they liked the most. Learning about nutrition can be fun! #LearningLeading #PerseverancePropelsProgress
