Mobile County Public Schools teachers are taking advantage of professional development opportunities this summer to improve their skills and create better learning experiences for their students. Among them are:

The Environmental Studies Center, 6101 Girby Road, is open this summer! Families are invited to explore the trails and exhibits to view native plants and wildlife. Many of the birds here were rescued after an injury. Admission is $3 per person, and hours are Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Be sure to check out the gift shop! #LearningLeading

This summer, Aryn Williams of Baker High is gaining valuable real-world experience through the MCPSS Summer Internship Program, working with the Student Services Department at Central Office. From managing communications to working with computer systems and filing, Aryn is building essential workplace skills that will carry her toward future success. She is one of 190 MCPSS students interning this summer with more than 80 local businesses, organizations and governmental entities as part of the program. #LearningLeading

What are you doing this summer? Murphy High senior Naima Dortch is in Sodwana Bay, South Africa, participating in the Youth International Cultural Awareness Program as part of Youth Diving With a Purpose. This group of students is working with NEWF, an organization that advocates for the protection of Africa's natural history and splendor through visual storytelling. Dortch, a member of Murphy's UA Early College, earned her rescue diver certification last month in Pelham before leaving for South Africa. #LearningLeading

The Mobile Arts Council has continued the Amp Up Arts program for a third summer at Chastang-Fournier K-8, bringing artists Zak Todd and Brian Tan to lead students in mural projects. The students added murals to the cafeteria, which was a continuation of last summer's art project, and painted a mural in the school’s band room. #LearningLeading

MCPSS students like these rising freshmen at Clark-Shaw Magnet got to explore careers in health care last month at the Health Science Exploratorium at Bishop State Community College. Students earned their First Aid Certification and received swag bags full of tools to help them succeed as they study the health science field. #LearningLeading

Theodore High School's Riley Ivey and Kimberly Chan and the rest of the Azalea Trail Maids, including many other MCPSS students, appeared in the Let Freedom Ring Parade in Marietta, Georgia, over the July 4th holiday. #LearningLeading

Congratulations to the Baker High School cheerleaders, who recently attended their first Masters Camp at the University of Alabama! They walked away with a gold ribbon in sideline and cheer, they won the performance routine category, and nine were named All-Americans! #LearningLeading

Congratulations to the students in Mary G. Montgomery's Future Business Leaders of America chapter. They were recognized as an “Outstanding Chapter” at the state level and a “Gold Chapter” at the national level at the FBLA 2025 National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, Calif. Alabama is sixth in the nation in Gold Champion Chapters. #LearningLeading

Do you have a child who will be starting kindergarten this fall? Many MCPSS elementary schools will be having kindergarten "Bridges" programs this month to give incoming students an opportunity to get familiar with their new surroundings. The Murphy High varsity and JV cheerleaders placed third in sideline, camp dance and cheer at a recent UCA cheerleading camp in Foley and had five members named UCA All-Americans for their performance: Malaysia Young, Brielle Turner, Kennedy Love, Marlasia Wallace and Martasia Burrell. Congratulations to the Lott Middle School cheerleaders, who placed first in dance and third overall at a recent UCA camp. Lott's Kelsie Mitchell won the Middle School Jump-Off and the Pin It Forward Award and was named a UCA All-American for her performance at the camp. #LearningLeading

Sumedh Patil and Owen Farmer recently represented Davidson High School at the 2025 Alabama Boys State, held at the University of Alabama. Hosted annually, Alabama Boys State brings together rising seniors from high schools across the state for a week-long immersive experience in government, leadership, and public service. Students campaign for office, pass legislation, and learn firsthand how state government operates. #LearningLeading

Congratulations to Mary G. Montgomery's Clara Hearn, the WKRG News 5 Scholar-Athlete of the Week! Hearn is a senior who is captain of the volleyball team and also plays basketball and runs track. Hearn has a 4.5 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Montgomery Maniacs. Williamson High student and football player Tim Malone is shadowing this summer at C-Sharpe Complex Building Restoration, where he's been paired with former Williamson Lion and current C-Sharpe Field Tech LaDerrick Lane.
