A documentary made by rising eighth-grader Cassie Williams of Denton Magnet School of Technology has been on display this week at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., as part of a special showcase in conjunction with National History Day. The documentary, entitled “Voyage of the Clotilda – Ocean of Tears,” won first place during the South Alabama Regional History Day and second place at the state competition. It is one of 28 History Day projects completed by MCPSS students selected to be presented in Washington, D.C., and the University of Maryland. Other MCPSS students presenting their projects this week are from Causey, Clark-Shaw, Denton and Lott middle schools and Blount, Citronelle, Davidson, Mary G. Montgomery and Murphy high schools. Five MCPSS high schools were recognized this month by Alabama Possible for having the highest participation rate in the state in the Alabama Direct Admission Initiative in their respective categories. They are: Vigor (small schools); B.C. Rain and LeFlore (medium schools); Davidson (large schools); and Mary G. Montgomery (extra-large schools). Through this program, the MCPSS Class of 2026 earned a record $1.1 billion in college scholarships, nearly eight times as much as last year. #LearningLeading

Middle school students are learning about the Career and Technical Education programs available at Faulkner Career Technical Center this week during its Summer Camp. Yesterday, they visited Flight Works Alabama and toured Airbus, learning how CTE programs connect directly to careers in aviation, advanced manufacturing, engineering, and technology. #LearningLeading

Along with hands-on STEM activities and industry site visits, the MCPSS JROTC STEM Leadership Academy challenges its cadets with a variety of leadership and fitness activities, including rappelling, orienteering, drownproofing and, this year, the Leadership Reaction Course. It's an obstacle course at the University of South Alabama's ROTC program that requires not only physical agility, but teamwork and perseverance to master. #LearningLeading
