Did you know an MCPSS alumnus was recently named Mobile's Poet Laureate? Alex Lofton, known throughout the community as Huggy Bear da Poet, was named Mobile's 2026-27 Poet Laureate, as announced earlier this month by the Mobile Arts Council, the City of Mobile and the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Lofton, an alumnus of LeFlore Magnet High School, has sought to use his poetry for two decades to unite people across racial, social and political divides.
The Poet Laureate program celebrates the power of poetry to uplift, connect, and inspire the people of Mobile. As an ambassador for the literary arts, the Poet Laureate will use the written and spoken word to deepen community engagement, promote creative expression, and celebrate the cultural vibrancy of the city. Congratulations! #LearningLeading #PerseverancePropelsProgress

The 68 Ventures Bowl partnered with Mobile County Public Schools as part of its Player Service Project Day at the Miracle League of West Mobile: Schmidt Family Park on Monday. About 40 NCAA football players from the University of Louisiana Lafayette and the University of Delaware served as "buddies" to children with disabilities to help them play a Buddy Ball baseball game at the park.
The Baker High School band greeted the athletes as they arrived, and Santa came to visit with the Miracle League players. #LearningLeading #PersverancePropelsProgress

Students at several MCPSS schools have learned about and developed a love for art through a partnership with Amp Up Arts, a program of the Mobile Arts Council that brings artists into the schools. Local artist artist Hannah Georgina Legg has collaborated with students at George Hall Elementary on a mural gracing its main hallway, and is now back to help them create another masterpiece.
