WKRG recently recognized three MCPSS teachers with Golden Apple Awards: Jacyln Brown of Hankins Middle; Mary Lou Hatcher-Davis of Baker High; and Jakarah Munnerlyn of John Will Elementary.

WKRG anchor Devon Walsh and sponsors of the award surprised the teachers in their classrooms. News stories about local Golden Apple Award winners air every Tuesday night on WKRG. Brown’s story is available here. Hatcher-Davis’ story will run on September 1, and Munnerlyn’s will run on September 8.

Brown, who teaches English Language Arts, was nominated by eight of her former students.

“She is an amazing teacher, and she deserves the world because of how sweet and kind she is,” one of the students wrote. “She is compassionate about her work and the kids that she teaches, and she always comes to work with a smile on her face.”

Hatcher-Davis, is the choir teacher at Baker High School. The student who nominated her said Hatcher-Davis has the ability to instill confidence in students as they hone their talents in her choir room.

“She helps all of her students in ways words cannot even explain,” the student wrote. “She is an amazing person, and she is an amazing teacher.”

Hundreds of John Will Elementary students gathered in the gym to surprise Munnerlyn as she received the award. Munnerlyn hosts many school events and serves as a mentor to other teachers.

Said her nominator: “Her relationship with her students and parents is unmatched. She gives them hope and constantly creates fun ideas to motivate everyone at school.”
