The Drug Education Council honored Red Ribbon Leaders from Mobile County schools during a ceremony on September 22 at Government Street Baptist Church. Students, parents, and educators were invited to the event to learn about the history of Red Ribbon Week and to receive instructions for the community service projects each student will be asked to complete.
Virginia Guy, Executive Director of the Drug Education Council, said that the Red Ribbon program had a record number of participating schools this year. Principals from 80 MCPSS schools selected Red Ribbon Leaders. These students are chosen to demonstrate the Six Pillars of Character promoted by the Character Counts initiative and the Drug Education Council: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
During Red Ribbon Week, which is celebrated during the last week of October, the Red Ribbon Leaders and their school sponsors will plan schoolwide events to promote the importance of a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The Red Ribbon Leaders are also encouraged to plan a community service project in the spring.
Here are the MCPSS Red Ribbon Leaders.
