Mobile County Public Schools has continued its streak of being the top fundraising school district in Alabama for the American Heart Association, as two dozen schools raised more than $161,000.

Meghan Robinson of the AHA gave an awards presentation during the September Principals Meeting, accompanied by Maggie, a second-grader at Hutchens Elementary who was born with a transposition of the great vessels in her heart and underwent open-heart surgery five days after her birth. Maggie and her classmates at Hutchens raised the most money of any MCPSS school with a grand total of $22,263.

The rest of the top 10 elementary schools:

  1. Taylor-White -- $17,716

  2. Collier -- $14,249

  3. Dawes -- $12,104

  4. Dodge -- $10,101

  5. Council -- $10,000

  6. Mary B. Austin -- $7,894

  7. Wilmer -- $5,705

  8. Robbins -- $5,166

  9. O'Rourke -- $5,149

The top two middle schools that raised the most funds were Lott and Causey. Citronelle was the top high school.

Schools earning "Heart of Gold" status were: Anna Booth, Causey, Craighead, Dodge, Florence Howard, J.E. Turner, Lott, Taylor-White, Robbins and Wilmer.

Schools earning "Heartbeat" status were Calcedeaver, Citronelle, Fonde, Hollinger's Island, Kate Shepard, Maryvale, Morningside, Orchard and The Pathway K-5.
