Retired Coach Honored with Tennis Court Dedication

Posted by Comm. Dept. in Athletics  |  Comments (7)

Once the new tennis courts were finished at Mary G. Montgomery, there was no hesitation as to what name would grace its fence.  Montgomery High School staff and students knew the courts should be named after retired educator and coach, Mr. Robert Lloyd Willis.  Coach Willis was instrumental in the students receiving new courts to learn and play tennis.  Through his hard work and efforts, he helped establish a tennis team for the high school and with a dream and determination he saw it possible for them to also have courts.  Before retiring, Mr. Willis, was an educator and coach for football and tennis at four Mobile County Public Schools.  During his tenure he touched the lives of hundreds of students, those of which who wrote letters of support to the Board of Commissioners stating his excellence in coaching and grateful parents who appreciate his positive mentorship.

Your school has taken a treasure of life and honored him so well.  This story is very touching and extremely well deserved.  I cannot think of anyone else that I feel reaches out to the youth in such a positive manner as he does.  When we were privileged to have him in Northeast Mississippi as our pastor, friend and "brother", he never turned us down on any request we had and always gave us hope.  He helped my family through some extremely tough times, and he will forever remain special in our hearts.  The tennis courts are a pleasant reminder for him that he can look back on and rejoice!  God Bless your school board, faculty and students for making this super choice.  God Bless.  Patsy Huskey
