The Mobile County Board of School Commissioners will be holding several public hearings during the next few weeks to discuss possible school closings and consolidations.
During the Board work session, March 4, Superintendent Dr. Roy Nichols presented the Board members with a list of six schools that are being considered. He is not yet recommending that the schools be closed but that the proposals be studied and hearings be held for public input.
Included on the list of possible closings: Fonvielle Elementary, Woodcock Elementary and Hillsdale Middle School. The proposal also calls for moving the students at Old Shell Road Magnet School to Dunbar Magnet School. Both focus on creative and performing arts and service the entire Mobile County Public School System.
Another possibility under consideration is combining Chickasaw and Clark Magnet schools, both emphasize math, science and technology. Those campuses would move to the former Shaw High School which was closed at the end of 2008. Both focus on mathematics, science and technology and service the entire Mobile County Public School System. Shaw is the current transportation hub for the Magnet Schools program.
Dr. Nichols says the savings to the system would be about $5.6 million a year in utilities, maintenance, staffing, insurance, and transportation.
Dates and locations for the public hearings will be placed on the website as soon as they have been scheduled.
