Summer Feeding Program and Seamless Summer Program

Helping to Feed Students in Need during the Summer Months

Montgomery, Ala. - School's out and summer fun has begun for students in the state. But for some student and parents in Alabama, the worry over lack of food overshadows the freedom of summer. The need for a free or reduced breakfast and lunch that is normally served by schools during the school day still remains when the last school bell rings.

The Summer Food Service Program and Seamless Summer program are designed to fill that nutrition gap and make sure children can get the nutritious meals they need. Both programs were created to ensure children in low-income areas could continue to receive nutritious meals during long school vacations, when they do not have access to school lunch or breakfast.

The Summer Feeding Service program has locations in many local communities in the state. They are often at local churches or community centers that sign up to be feeding sites. The food is prepared and served at the sites to all school age children, 1-18 years of age. Seamless Summer is also state-run summer feeding program. The meals from Seamless Summer are served at local schools. There is no charge for either program and students can come for breakfast and/or lunch at available sites.

To find the Summer Food Service distribution locations in Mobile, read the chart below or please visit the 2010 Summer Food Service sites. To find Seamless Summer sites, please visit the 2010 Seamless Summer sites or call your local Board of Education and speak to the Child Nutrition Director. Please contact the specific sites for the hours meals are served.

"Hunger is one of the most severe roadblocks to the learning process. Lack of nutrition during the summer months may set up a cycle for poor performance once school begins again," said Perry Fulton, Director of Child Nutrition at the Alabama Department of Education. "We encourage all qualifying students to take part in the summer food service programs in their area."

For more information, please contact the Alabama Department of Education, Child Nutrition Section at 334-242-1988 or your local Board of Education.
