MOBILE, Alabama -- Officials with Greater Gulf State Fair are offering an incentive to students who do well on their EQT’s (End of Quarter Tests) this week.
They’re giving away free tickets to the fair.
Students who score at least a 90 percent on all of their EQT’s will get one admission ticket to the fair, which will be in town Oct. 25-Nov. 3.
This is due to a renewed partnership between the school system and the fair. A few weeks ago, students sold unlimited ride armbands for the fair at a discounted price. Schools received $2 back from each armband sold to go to their libraries.
Seventy schools participated in the fundraiser.
Students sold 8,675 armbands, 6,533 adult admission tickets and 3,348 child admission tickets.
In return, our libraries received $17,350.
“Students were excited to get the armbands at a good price while helping their schools out at the same time,” said Rena Philips, supervisor of marketing and education partnerships for MCPSS.
“Now, we’re hoping the next part of this partnership will help encourage students to ace their EQT’s,” Philips added. “We’re grateful for the organizers of the Greater Gulf States Fair for doing this.”
The Greater Gulf States Fair will be held at The Grounds on Cody and Zeigler roads in west Mobile. It will feature family-friendly fun, rides, lots of food and food on a stick, and shows ranging from Thomas the Tank Engine and Angelina Ballerina to The Gator Boys from the hit reality television show.
There will be Color Me Rad color bombs on Halloween night and, of course, a stampede and rodeo. And there will even be pole vaulting.
Vendors will set up booths in the marketplace.
The Mobile County Public Schools will have a booth featuring students from career-technical education programs illustrating what they are learning. Students in advanced health classes will be there to measure blood pressure.
We plan to have a flight simulator from the Signature Academy at B.C. Rain High School and other equipment that we use in our classrooms to give students a hand-on approach to learning skills needed for jobs readily available in Mobile County.
Comments on "Make A's on your EQT's, get a free ticket to the Greater Gulf States Fair"
This is a great idea. Unfortunately, due to the new Common Core standards, many children who would have previously benefitted from such an incentive will not be able to take advantage of this reward due to their extremely low EQT scores. Their self esteem is already damaged and their motivation to learn is waning. Why don't we wait to roll out an incentive program for children AFTER we have effectively trained education professionals how to make sense of common core standards? MCPSS always builds the plane WHILE they are flying it, and our children suffer because of it.
Reply: This is a brand new partnership we plan to learn from. The fair is next week, so this is the timing we're working with. We're hoping to do this again next year.
This would have been nice to know before we bought the fair tickets two weeks ago. *SMH*
Reply: This is a brand new program and partnership. We'll do better at getting the word out next time. Meanwhile, bring someone you know to the fair and have a great time. And congratulations to your children for making all A's.
