W. H. Council Traditional School science lab teacher, Joyce Cromer, has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the Toshiba America Foundation. Her project “Growing Green” will be used to set up a composting program for the school. Already actively participating in the recycling effort in our city, our school community will work together to help recycle our food wastes instead of throwing them into the trash containers. The students will place their left-over food daily in a specially marked barrel in the cafeteria. Each day, the barrel will be emptied into the compost bin placed outside near the cafeteria. Grass clippings and trimmings will be included. The process will be introduced to all of the students through their weekly visit to the science lab. Classroom teachers will include lessons in their math, science, social studies and language arts curriculum that support the recycling effort. Students will be taught to maintain the compost pile and use the recycled “soil” in the raised gardening beds on the school grounds. All grade levels will help maintain the project, focusing on curriculum standards at their level. Parents who compost at home will be encouraged to help with the project. The project will be explained to parents at a PTA meeting and newsletter at the beginning of the program. We are very excited to get started.
Elementary schools from throughout the United States received grants up to $1,000 for project-based learning in science and mathematics. Toshiba America Foundation (TAF) grants fund the projects ideas and materials teachers need to innovate in their math and science classrooms. TAF is interested in funding projects designed by teachers or small teams of teachers for use in their own schools. Toshiba America Foundation believes science and mathematics are exciting fields in which all students can succeed with the proper tools and instruction. Toshiba America Foundation grants support public and nonprofit private schools throughout the United States. Founded in 1990, with support from Toshiba Corporation and the Toshiba America Group Companies, Toshiba America Foundation (TAF) is dedicated to helping classroom teachers make mathematics and science learning fun and successful for students in U.S. schools.
