Gifted Education Specialist named Vice-President of state association

Posted by Comm. Dept. in General  |  Comments (19)

Gifted education specialist for Collins Rhodes and Indian Springs Elementary Schools, Gwendolyn Williams Jones was elected as Vice President of the Alabama Association for Gifted Children at its 16th annual conference on September 28th 2012 in Birmingham Alabama.

Ms. Jones' experience with gifted children has span more than twenty years. Holding three degrees from the University of Mobile and two from the University of South Alabama, her interests and experiences are as diverse as the domains of giftedness in her students.

She has been instrumental in identifying underserved populations in the schools that she services. Her career goal is to become a national consultant for gifted education with special attention placed on the identification process of minority populations.

When asked about her vision for Mobile County School System gifted students, she stated, “To increase awareness of our most valuable resource…(Ms. Jones, pictured 3rd from the left-back row)
gifted children. It would appear that society has not given equal attention to the education of the gifted as it has to other special populations. Because of these inequities twenty percent of our gifted students drop out before completing high school, because their fire for learning becomes extinguished. When students leave my class, I ask them “what have you learned today, that you didn’t know yesterday that you will remember tomorrow?” “Children remember what they learn, not what they memorize.”

Gwen,

Congratulations on yet another awesome accomplishment.  Please do the system a favor and keep thinking outside the box.  Eventually, someone will come along and join you.  LOL.  I miss working with you.  Let have a catch up day soon with the "old crew".

Hello Gwen,

Congratulations on your accomplishments. I was one of those gifted students that dropped out many years ago. I appreciate and support your mission. If fact, i returned to school (college) a couple years ago, and have been doing great. My degree progam is Education and Public Policy, because I desire to support our state and country's greatest asset (gifted children) that is constantly overlooked. If there is anyway I can be of support to your cause please contact me.

Thank God for Gwen! I'm not surprised!!

I'm just so happy to hear she is still fighting the good fight for those of us who "get it" and our children.  Just a note to let you know, Gwen, I am too!!

I have to ditto the mom above who wishes we had a support group!  There is so much about giftedness so many do not get.

Gwen is so right about gifted children being underserved and I'm thrilled to see her taking advantage of her pulpit to point this out and further their casue for all of us.  It's called "gifted" because their potential is a gift to the world.  Sadly, the gift of so many students is treated like a piggy bank someone got for a birthday only to put it away in the closet in its box.  Because of their enhanced social and emotional needs though, you would have to put a time released bomb in the box too - to get the full effect!  Teachers like Gwen take the bank out of the box and start a savings plan for the world!!

There is no end to the potential our gifteds have for making our world a better place.  There is no substitute for the teacher who can recognize and lovingly nurture their talents.

Congratulations, Gwen.  You are a special advocate for the gifted student as well as their teachers.  I know you will serve us well.  Mobile should be so proud that the "other half" of the state will be represented in such a distinguished way.

As a parent of a recently identified gifted student, I was dismayed to learn that funding for gifted services seems to be perceived as a luxury, and that most of our education dollars are used to educate students who are achieving below their potential. Gifted children are just as in need of consideration that is backed by funded programming. I am glad to know there is a Mobile representative in the state association. I would love to see a parents' group form in Mobile. Congratulations, Ms. Jones.
