Building a Better Tomorrow with Vertical Planning

Vertical Planning is Born!

Florence Howard is committed to building a better tomorrow by building a better student.  In order to accomplish this our faculty has begun the process of vertical planning.  The focus of the first meeting was for each sending grade level to discuss with the receiving grade level objectives that should be reviewed during the first week of school. A concentration was to determine how the faculty can assist students transition from summer break back into school.  Future vertical planning meetings will discuss curriculum changes that will increase student achievement. Howard elementary believes that its vertical planning sessions will ultimately prepare students for academic success as they transition from one grade level to the next.  Stay tuned for excellence!

This sounds like a wonderful way to unite the faculty in providing single sets of grade level objectives for measuring student progress; it can also serve to allow teachers to provide their professional opinions about the strengths and weaknesses of the prior year's groups of students' academic endeavors. It would be time saving. I have one concern, though: What about the students who are transferring in to your school?

Rather than having to hold Vertical Planning meetings to help students transition from summer break back into school, why don't we move to a year round school calendar with shorter and more frequent breaks between each nine week quarter and the transition would be minimized.
