Hankins Teacher Chosen as a New Leader for New Schools

Posted by Comm. Dept. in General  |  Comments (25)

New Leaders for New Schools, a non-profit organization has selected Ms. Debra Broughton, teacher at Hankins Middle School, to participate in the 2010 Residency Cohort of new leaders across America. The experience will consist of three components; (1) Summer Foundational Seminar at Boston University and Harvard University in (2) Foundational Seminars in selected cities across the United States and a (3) Principal Residency in a secondary urban school in Memphis, Tennessee.

The mission of NLNS is to ensure high academic achievement for every student by attracting and preparing outstanding leaders and supporting the performance of the urban public school they lead. New Leaders for New School's vision is that one day every student will graduate from high school ready for success in college, careers, and citizenship, starting with students in at least 10 U.S. cities by 2020.

Ms. Broughton will join a diverse network of effective school leaders who share critical core beliefs about the potential of all children and the responsibility of adults to help them realize their potential. These individuals will participate in the most innovative and effective school leadership training and support programs in the nation. To date, the most improved and highest performing schools in 7 cities-and, in 2 cases states-have been led by New Leaders principals.

Since the year 2000, over 22,000 applicants have applied and only 600 have been selected into the residency program. Ms. Broughton was only one selected from an applicant pool of over 1200 for the 2010 Cohort for Memphis City Schools.
