Magnet schools are accelerated schools that teach National Common Core Standards, plus other academic skills needed to increase student learning. A student who seeks enrollment in a magnet school should be a motivated and academically high-performing student.

Applications for the 2014-15 MCPSS Magnet Schools Program will be available on-line at www.mcpss.com located under the "For Parents" tab, beginning January 3, 2014.  Any application received prior to January 3, 2014 is invalid for the 2014-15 school year. Students who applied in previous years must re-apply after January 2, 2014 to be included in the Waiting Pool of Applicants for the 2014-15 school year.

See and Sign Days are scheduled at all magnet schools on January 24, 2014 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm and on January 25, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  This event is open to all parents and students interested in the magnet program.  Magnet school staff will be available to answer any questions you may have.  Parents of prospective magnet students are encouraged to vist a magnet school before submitting their child's application.

Application Process

Upon successful completion of the web application, the parent will receive a computer generated application number. Please record this application number for future reference.  The application number indicates that the system has sucessfully accepted the application.   If an application number is not generated, the application was not successfully entered into Waiting Pool of Applicants. The parent should repeat the application process.

*NOTE*  DO NOT USE YOUR BROWSER "BACK" BUTTON/ARROW during the application process.  Use our application prompts and buttons.  Using your "back" button will cause loss of information and delay your application process.  If all on-line attempts fail, the parent has the option go to any magnet school for application assistance, or to call the Magnet Schools Program Office at (251) 221-4039 or 4038 for additional help.

Selection

Eligible applicants are placed in a Waiting Pool of Applicants to await possible selection into a magnet school.  The number of selected students may vary depending on the number of openings that are available in the desired magnet school. Letters of selection are mailed to students by the Magnet Schools Program Office beginning in April and additional notification of selection continues until all vacancies are filled.  If the student is not selected in the 1st drawing, the student does not need to reapply. The student's application is active throughout the magnet application process for all drawings during the current school year.

Only 1 application per student will be included in the Waiting Pool of Applicants. Submitting multiple applications will not improve a student's probability of being selected and can often decrease the student's chances by giving the student a lower random number in the selection process.  A student should only apply for the magnet school they want to attend, but he/she may apply for up to 3 different magnet schools on a single application.

All vacancies are not filled in April.  Additional vacancies may be declared by magnet school principals during the summer months.

Residency Requirements

A student must be a resident living in the school zones of the Mobile County Public School System at the time application is made for a magnet school to be eligible for placement and continuation in the Magnet Schools Program.

Two proofs of residence are required by all magnet schools.  Falsification of residence location constitutes grounds for immediate removal from a magnet school.

Transfers

Transfers into or between magnet schools is not permitted. If a current magnet student wishes to change to a different magnet school outside of their feeder pattern, the student must first noncommit to the 2014-15 selected magnet school, then submit a new application for the desired magnet school.  The student will then be placed back in the random selection process with all other applicants, and no guarantee of placement is promised.

Thank you for your interest in The Magnet Program!
